Alice Springs Airport (ASP) Information: History and Facilities
Established towards the end of 1921, the arrival of Alice Springs Airport was the cause for much celebration in the township. The airport immediately allowed this relatively remote part of Australia's Northern Territory to now be reached quickly and with relative ease, with Connellan Airways (Connair) being the main airline for many years.
Due to increased usage by the Australian Department of Defence, the impressive Seven Mile Aerodrome was constructed in the early 1940s and allowed heavier, larger aircraft to land here. The airport was officially named 'Alice Springs Airport' is 1958 and over the years, the runway has been lengthened and the facilities improved.
Today, Alice Springs Airport is a modern hub and home to a large, air-conditioned terminal building, where duty-free shopping is available and a number of quality Aboriginal souvenirs can be purchased. Various car rental companies, taxi firms and inexpensive shuttle buses connect the nearby city centre and other parts of the Northern Territory, including the West MacDonnell National Park.
